Tina Waldrom talks with Chris Friend about The Gospel and Disability. Chris is the CEO of Collective Hope Community Services in Perth, Western Australia. Chris never imagined that his life, and the life of the churches he leads, would minister in this direction. Seeking to meet the needs of the local community, the heart of Jesus led him, and his team to spaces of disability. He talks openly about the cost of following Christ into this area and the great joy of seeing restoration in Jesus’ name.
Chris Friend is local pastor who has planted a number of churches. He is also the national leader for IPHC Ministries. In 2014, a group of people from his church, Collective Hope, recognised the issue of homelessness in their area. An initial home was set up to minister to the need, and further homes developed from there. Mental health disabilities became apparent among those they were ministering to and as a response, Collective Hope Disability Services was set up. Today, there is a host of services that are offered, meeting the community needs. CHDS is now an accredited NDIS provider in Perth, bringing hope and life to many.
In this episode, Chris talks about the way Christians should view disability and the role the church can play. He talks passionately about the ‘proclamation’ of the gospel and the ‘doing’ of the gospel. He sees them both as different sides of the one coin. One cannot exist without the other. Chris discusses the need for people to see and experience Christ, not just hear about Him. His contention is that Aussies need to see how Jesus can be the answer to their problem. People need to see how the good news can help them not merely hear about it.
In this podcast episode, you will discover…
How Christians can minister to those with disability.
What the Bible says about the gospel and disability.
How the Collective Hope Disability Services came about.
The story of a local pastor developing an effective community service.
The starting point for churches to develop a community service.
Stories of people finding Christ as they see Him in the lives of believers.
How Isaiah 58 informs discussion on, The Gospel and Disability.
Principles for Kingdom transformation in communities.
Why a long-term approach to discipleship is necessary with community outreach.

Change is Needed in Mission & Evangelism. Tina Waldrom interviews the National Director of Catalyse Change to discuss this topic. Steve Roggero, also the senior minister of Sydenham Baptist Church, is passionate about the church fulfilling the great commission. Steve’s contention is that the modern, western church has made unknowing, small steps in a direction that has not been healthy. Not optimal for the overall mission of God. Steve Roggero was a youth minister for many years, being privileged to see a great number of believers formed into strong disciples of Christ. Trained and equipped for the mission of God. His wisdom, experience and leadership are helping many church leaders make the necessary changes to see the great commission fulfilled. To see disciples of Christ made.
In this episode, Steve talks about the ingredients that were present when he witnessed the effective ways that people were made into disciples of Christ. He talks about a type of discipleship that naturally articulated into people being about the mission of God. Where did things go wrong? Why did things change? What are the answers to recalibrate? Steve, gives some wise and insightful responses to these questions and more. This is an episode for everyone to engage with, for everyone to wrestle through.

He talks openly about a wrong focus on results but explains the outcomes he is looking for. He discusses the real need for pastors to see or experience gospel results but redefines what this can look like. Tina Waldrom discusses Kingdom Communities with Andrew Menzies. Andrew, who co-authored the book, Kingdom Communities is all about shining the light of Christ through faith, hope and love. He has led a number of churches, currently serving as the senior minister at Mitcham Baptist in Victoria. Andrew is very practical yet highly educated. He unpacks the need, and his ideas for Kingdom language and consequently, what this means for outreach in the western church.
In this episode, Andrew shares the stories of many, including himself, who are seeing the Kingdom of God come to people’s lives in very natural ways. Stories where faith, hope and love are breaking into people’s lives through the simple, yet powerful method of ‘presence’. Stories of lives being transformed with the gospel in ways that everyday believers can be involved with.

Tina Waldrom speaks with Mike Wardrop about A New Era for Church & Evangelism. Mike and his wife Jen, are lead pastors at Encounter Church in Adelaide, South Australia. Mike and Jen also the co-host the podcast, Read the Room. Mike planted Encounter Church, with a particular methodology in mind. After Covid hit, he knew that a new approach to church and evangelism was needed. Mike talks honestly about the challenges the churches now face. He believes we have entered a New Era for Church & Evangelism.
Looking back, the church seems to move through seasons that have a particular emphasis to reach the world for Christ. Mike and Tina talk over the season that was often referred to as the, “Seeker” times. The emphasis was on making the church message relevant to those who would attend church services, and so much more. That season was superseded in many ways by what was, and still is, referred to as the “Missional” movement or approach. There was, among other things, a focus to take the church outside of the church building and to society. Mike feels that Covid, has now ushered in a new approach. This approach, a discipleship approach is the best way forward for the church post-Covid.
Mike’s contention, along with others at this time in church history, is that the everyday person needs to be discipled well. Discipled in such a way, that believers would easily and naturally reach out and disciple the world around them. In this episode, Mike discusses the seasons we have been through and the reasons why a discipleship approach to church and evangelism is the best way forward. He discusses what this means and how this can be implemented. It’s a fascinating discussion.
In this podcast episode, you will discover…
Why it may be a new era for church & evangelism.
A new way to approach church & evangelism post Covid.
The need for a discipleship culture to reach a world for Christ.
What a discipleship culture is and how it facilitates outreach.
How seeker services and a missional approach to church needs to evolve.
What caused a shallow level of discipleship and its effects?
What a discipling culture is and who Mike Breen is.
Why new methods of evangelism are needed in Australia.
How to use the Aussie resource, BDC.
Practical ideas to bring deeper discipleship to people’s lives.
Why the great commission needs well-formed disciples of Christ?

Tina Waldrom speaks with Kim Haworth who is an Unexpected Salvo in Tasmania. Kim is living the most unexpected life as a Divisional Commander, a State Leader with the Salvation Army. She never thought God was knowable. She never thought she would end up, as a captain in the Salvation Army. She is encouraging new initiatives to reach people for Christ. Alongside existing models of outreach, new organic faith expressions are springing up. The OFE network is a part of Kim’s focus to see revival in Tasmania.
After Kim’s initial encounter with Christ, she sensed a call from God to be involved in church work. It took some time for the Lord to convince her. It took some time for Kim to give her all to this. Her story is down to earth and very warm. It shows the extraordinary things the Lord can do, through someone who says ‘yes’ to the His promptings. It demonstrates the power of a surrendered life in the hands of a God who is on mission to reach the world.
In this episode, Kim talks about the challenges of handling the unexpected promptings of the Lord. From her experience, she concluded that it’s better to give up and just say yes to Jesus. The joy of following Him on the unexpected journey of faith and outreach, far outweighs the challenges. Kim gives some wonderful spiritual advise and talks about the importance of new methods of outreach in Australia.
In this podcast episode, you will discover…
Kim’s story of nominal Christianity to a relationship with Christ.
How a wife and mother end up as a State Leader with the Salvation Army.
How to respond to God’s challenging promptings.
Why fighting God is not the best way to go.
How an invitation to church changed Kim’s life.
Why new methods of evangelism are needed in Australia.

Tina Waldrom speaks with Nic Mackay about How to Measure the Community Impact of Churches. Why even bother? Nic, the National Director of NAYBA Australia, talks about the valuable work that churches do, but highlights the need to strategically verify those contributions. Support from local government is one potential outcome of a better reporting system. Churches are often good at telling the stories, however further information is needed. Nic shares the stories of churches in regions, who have successfully audited their community work. He talks about the doors of opportunity that this has created.
NAYBA provides churches with practical help and resources to equip them to better love their neighbours and transform their neighbourhoods. One of the resources that they provide is the Impact Audit. Through the NAYBA Impact Audit they help to measure the social impact value of the Church in community – putting numbers to the stories of how local churches are serving those in need, and opening doors to government and other sectors.
In this episode, Nic refers to audits in both Frankston, Victoria and Illawarra, NSW. These reports give a better understanding of what data can be discovered in an Impact Audit and how it can be used beneficially for the gospel. Gaining a community wide perspective on what churches are contributing to a community is a powerful tool in a number of ways.
In this podcast episode, you will discover…
How the collective contribution of churches can be quantified?
The doors that can be opened through rigorous reporting.
The role of NAYBA in helping churches understand their effectiveness in the community.
How to report so local government can assess and support the church.
What to ask when measuring community impact?
Why telling stories of church impact is only a starting point.
How to quantify the value that the faith community makes to a community.
Two church audits that have helped further the gospel in local communities.
How to better understand the collective contribution of churches in a given community.
Why reporting on the dollar value that churches contributed is so important.
