Mid-Year Highlights #2 The Church Settled or Sent?

In the middle of 2023, the topic of "The Church Settled or Sent" has become the second most widely downloaded episode. Perhaps this is because Doctor Kurt Fredrickson was able to articulate what many had been thinking, or perhaps it was because the Lord Himself had already been revealing this truth. The episode's popularity could also be attributed to Kurt's ability to live out the principles he preached, as he confronted challenges without dismantling or undermining the body of Christ. His genuine love for the church radiates through his demeanour. Regardless of the cause, this episode struck a chord with Christian believers all over the world during the first half of 2023.
In this episode, Tina Waldrom speaks with Doctor Kurt Fredrickson about The Church, Settled or Sent? The Bible paints a picture of a missionary God and His people sent into a world that needs Christ. Why then does the church settle and lose its influence in the world? Why does it live settled and not sent? Kurt Fredrickson is the current Associate Dean for Professional Doctoral Programs at Fuller Theological Seminary in California, USA. Before his role at Fuller, Kurt led his church from being settled to living sent. It was not an easy road. He shares the lessons learnt.
Kurt Fredrickson is in a unique position. Previously a church pastor, he now meets and journeys with hundreds of church leaders who pass through the doctoral programs at Fuller Seminary. He knows the current struggles that leaders face. He understands the complexities of the world the church is called to, and he is passionate about the church being salt and light in local contexts. As a practitioner, he made the hard calls. He made the changes to move his church from a place of comfort to a place of discomfort. And yes, people left the church and the budget suffered. But nevertheless, he and his church lived as a sent people.
In this episode, Kurt lays the biblical foundation for the people of God living as a sent people. He talks about an eternal, missionary God, and the implications for local congregations. He is kind enough to share his own shortcomings and graceful in sharing the wisdom learnt. He talks about the people who left his church. About the financial drop that his church experienced and the cost of calling the church to deeper discipleship. Kurt, in a very frank conversation, gives some great insights on how to move a church to a place of sentness.

The Gospel and Disability with Chris Friend

Tina Waldrom talks with Chris Friend about The Gospel and Disability. Chris is the CEO of Collective Hope Community Services in Perth, Western Australia. Chris never imagined that his life, and the life of the churches he leads, would minister in this direction. Seeking to meet the needs of the local community, the heart of Jesus led him, and his team to spaces of disability. He talks openly about the cost of following Christ into this area and the great joy of seeing restoration in Jesus’ name.
Chris Friend is local pastor who has planted a number of churches. He is also the national leader for IPHC Ministries. In 2014, a group of people from his church, Collective Hope, recognised the issue of homelessness in their area. An initial home was set up to minister to the need, and further homes developed from there.  Mental health disabilities became apparent among those they were ministering to and as a response, Collective Hope Disability Services was set up. Today, there is a host of services that are offered, meeting the community needs. CHDS is now an accredited NDIS provider in Perth, bringing hope and life to many.
In this episode, Chris talks about the way Christians should view disability and the role the church can play. He talks passionately about the ‘proclamation’ of the gospel and the ‘doing’ of the gospel. He sees them both as different sides of the one coin. One cannot exist without the other. Chris discusses the need for people to see and experience Christ, not just hear about Him. His contention is that Aussies need to see how Jesus can be the answer to their problem. People need to see how the good news can help them not merely hear about it.

In this episode, Tina Waldrom interviews Tim O'Neill, the Chair of Exponential Australia, on the topic of Healthy Church Multiplication. Connecting Influences and Ideas for Global Mission: Insights from Lausanne Oceania

Tina Waldrom interviews Julian Dunham and Julie-anne Laird, regional director, and co-regional director for Lausanne Oceania respectively. The Lausanne Movement is a global network of Christian influencers and leaders who are passionate about sharing the Gospel of Jesus Christ with the world. It was founded in 1974 by Billy Graham and John Stott and has since become a platform for collaboration and partnership in fulfilling the Great Commission.
In this episode, Julian and Julie-anne note that the world is rapidly changing and that there is a need for diverse perspectives and approaches to share the gospel effectively. Issue networks are groups of individuals that come together to explore a particular issue or topic related to evangelism and mission. Some discussion is given to these and what is being addressed in Australia. Julian and Julie-anne highlight the Fourth Lausanne Congress on World Evangelisation in Korea in 2024.
