Tina Waldrom talks with Chris Friend about The Gospel and Disability. Chris is the CEO of Collective Hope Community Services in Perth, Western Australia. Chris never imagined that his life, and the life of the churches he leads, would minister in this direction. Seeking to meet the needs of the local community, the heart of Jesus led him, and his team to spaces of disability. He talks openly about the cost of following Christ into this area and the great joy of seeing restoration in Jesus’ name.
Chris Friend is local pastor who has planted a number of churches. He is also the national leader for IPHC Ministries. In 2014, a group of people from his church, Collective Hope, recognised the issue of homelessness in their area. An initial home was set up to minister to the need, and further homes developed from there. Mental health disabilities became apparent among those they were ministering to and as a response, Collective Hope Disability Services was set up. Today, there is a host of services that are offered, meeting the community needs. CHDS is now an accredited NDIS provider in Perth, bringing hope and life to many.
In this episode, Chris talks about the way Christians should view disability and the role the church can play. He talks passionately about the ‘proclamation’ of the gospel and the ‘doing’ of the gospel. He sees them both as different sides of the one coin. One cannot exist without the other. Chris discusses the need for people to see and experience Christ, not just hear about Him. His contention is that Aussies need to see how Jesus can be the answer to their problem. People need to see how the good news can help them not merely hear about it.

Tina Waldrom speaks with Titilia Brown about Honest Community work In Jesus Name. Titilia is the Community Care Coordinator at Hands and Feet. Hands and Feet are unique in that they have a long history of providing help to the helpless, but they also train other churches to do the same. The model is Christlike. See people how Jesus sees them and engage with people through the eyes of Christ. Love unconditionally and care with no strings attached. This type of honest community work in Jesus’ name, paradoxically draws people to the person of Christ.
Hands and Feet are a Christian organisation that loves Christ. They feel the burden to help people in need. Community work done in Jesus' name should always prioritize honesty and purity. As Christians, we are called to be honest in our dealings with others, and to live with pure intentions that reflect our faith in Christ. However, our ultimate goal should not only be to serve the community but to also share the message of Christ's love and salvation. There are ways to hold these two in tension with honesty and integrity.
In this episode, Titilia encourages people to keep in mind that people need to know Christ, and our community work can serve as an honest means of introducing them to Him. Therefore, we must strive to demonstrate Christ's love and compassion in our actions, while also sharing the truth of the gospel in a loving and respectful way. By doing so, we can effectively impact our communities and lead others to a saving relationship with Jesus Christ.
In this podcast episode, you will discover…
What it means to do honest work in Jesus’ name.
Who Hands and Feet are and what they do in Australia.
How pure intensions can ultimately lead people to Christ.
Why knowing Christ and being Christ work hand in hand.
What loving people unconditionally looks like.
Stories of people coming to faith through community work.
Why people coming to faith in Christ is still important.

Tina Waldrom speaks with Reverend Scott Hawkins about Leading a Church into the Community. Scott has ‘skin in the game’. As the senior minister at Urban Life, he is highly involved in the local community. His congregation are following his example. For Scott, it’s imperative that he does what he’s asking others to do. For Scott, a church that is highly involved in the community is the model he’s committing to. With 35+ years of ministry experience, working in many denominations and Christian organisations, he’s clear on what church needs to look like. Scott talks about the community work that Urban Life does and the weekend service the church offers.
Scott was once referred to as a ‘mongrel pastor’. Having been involved in many denominations, he has a perspective that is unique and refreshing. Having worked for Compassion Australia, he has insights that are also invaluable for the local church. Having worked for both larger and smaller churches and having planted churches, he is in a unique position to evaluate church models. He comments on why he is now Leading a Church into the Community and how that looks.
In this episode, Scott talks about his ministry journey and how important it is for him to lead by example. Bringing Jesus into a community can be both complicated and challenging. Scott explains the simple and natural ways for churches to partner with God in their locality. He and his church are seeking the Kingdom of God in any given situation and doing their best to perceive where God is at work. And to join in. There are many great insights for all believers in this episode. Leading a Church into the Community is an exciting discussion.
In this podcast episode, you will discover…
What a local church in the community can look like.
Why Rev. Scott slept in a box outside his church.
Wisdom from a pastor who has led in many different spaces.
What the real need of homelessness is.
A model of church where believers are serving their community.
How to lead a church into the community.
